If you like new experiences and you are looking for an adventure tour, this is the one for you!
Barra Honda is a one of a kind National Park located in Guanacaste. It is the most important cave system discovered so far in the country dating more than 60 million years. These limestone caves are formed on its interior with stalagmites, stalactites and outstanding rock formations.
Our adventure tour begins with a hike through the tropical dry forest. You will be able to enjoy a great variety of species of flora and abundant wildlife. Howler monkeys, white-tailed deer and the armadillos, among others, inhabit this scenic National Park.
The complex system of caverns that we will visit has only been explored by 50% by scientists, the rest remains a mystery. The caverns are independent formations, without connections between them located on a hill that in antiquity was thought to be a volcano. Confusing the caves with volcanic vents and the stink of the bats’ guano with volcanic gases.
The real adventure tour begins when arriving at the “Terciopelo” cavern. We will descend 55 ft going down a slope full of massive formations of stalactites and stalagmites, opening to a wide chamber of breathtaking beauty. Some of the highlights include a formation called “El órgano” (pipe organ) due to the sound it produces when is hit gently, helictites named by its strange forms like the fried eggs, popcorn or the shark teeth. Inside the caves, you will hear the sound of water dripping forming the amazing rock shapes and you will visit two more chambers inside.
