Surfing in Guancaste

Welcome to one of the surf capitals of the world! Guanacaste, Costa Rica is just that. Surfers from all over the globe travel to the region of Guancaste to enjoy the sand and waves of these beautiful beaches. The surf town of Tamarindo has much to offer, whether a beginner or a pro, there is something for everyone to make your surfing experience memorable. Tamarindo is located an hour south of Liberia on the Nicoya Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest. With surf shops galore, you have the option of renting boards as well as taking a lesson or two. Just down the road about 40 minutes, Playa Grande will entice the surfer in you with wave after wave to catch from sun up to sun down. For those who want to test their skills against others, surf tournaments take place regularly at the beaches. If you’re not quite ready to put yourself out there, being a spectator to these events is always a great way to spend the morning.

Traveling just an hour south of Tamarindo and Playa Grande, Marbella has become known as one of the best in the area for surfers. Consistent world class breakers, Marbella plays host to the perfect offshore winds surfers are always seeking. Playa Marbella however, is not for the faint of heart. The surf is for the more experienced surfers as the breakers can become quite high. Although this beach is quiet, it makes for the perfect retreat for those surfers looking to get away from it all.
